Hatton cards 66 to win at Frilford Heath

Tyrrell Hatton (Harleyford Golf Club) won the final stage of Qualifying School for the 2012 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire.

Hatton carded a final round of 66 on the par-72 course to finish on 18 under for the tournament, four shots ahead of second-placed Jack Senior (Heysham Golf Club), who had been tied for the lead with Hatton overnight.

The pair had played together several times as amateurs and Hatton says that helped him feel a little more relaxed on his final round.

“There’s always a bit of pressure on the final day but I was looking forward to it,” he explained.

“It felt like being an amateur again playing with Jack and Paul [Cutler, who finished tied third on nine under] on the final round. We spent a lot of last summer competing for Walker Cup spots, they got in and I didn’t!”

A heavy fog engulfed Frilford Manor early on, forcing a 90-minute delay to the start of play, but that proved little distraction for Hatton.

“I only live 45 minutes away from the course so I just stayed home and chilled out listening to some music until it was time to leave,” he said.

Ruaidhri McGee (Golfhub) completed his final round in 68, leaving him tied for third with Cutler (Portstewart).

James Whatley (Morley Hayes Golf) achieved a hole in one on the 16th in the process of recording a final round of six under while Robert Harris (LJJ Ltd/Francis Kirk and Son) hit the day’s best round, a 65 to end four under for the tournament.

The 888poker.com PGA EuroPro Tour gets underway with the Motocaddy Masters at Wensum Valley between April 25 and 27.
