Robinson Does The Double!

SIMON ROBINSON secured back-to-back victories on the PGA EuroPro Tour after edging out Richard Squire in a play-off at The Oakley International Open.

Robinson was among the leaders throughout, shooting 64 and 73 alongside Yasin Ali to share the advantage going into the final round, which was delayed on Friday to allow the final 33 players to finish their second round.

While Ali was unable to keep up his challenge, shooting 75 for his final round, Robinson shot a 69 to move to -10 for the tournament.

A superb 65 from Richard Squire – who shot five birdies and an eagle, saw him move out to -10 and force Robinson to get up and down out of the bunker on the last to ensure a play-off.

After returning up the 18th, Squire missed the fairway at the first extra hole and then landed short before making a bogey – with Robinson only having to two-putt from ten feet to claim a second successive title.

“I’m over the moon,” said Robinson. “On the first day I was still on a high after the Swallow Suffolk win last week.

“It was amazing, and I ended up shooting a 64 but then the nerves came on the second day, when I was also feeling a little under the weather.

“I was pleased to come out of it among the leaders because it was a long day and today I should have shot 66 but managed to get the play-off.

“My first shot gave me the advantage and I had a nice seven iron into the green and managed to get down for par.”

He added: “This puts me up the Order of Merit now and I know that spots are available on the Challenge Tour and, more importantly, the First Stage of European Tour School. That’s got to be my aim.”

Barry Hume and Grant Hamerton – who was playing in his first tournament for two years – shared third place at -7, with a 71 from Michael Welch giving him fifth place a shot further back.

A 68 from Mark Prue, who was among the players forced to finish their second round on Friday morning after Thursday’s rain delays – put pressure on the leaders going into the final round, but a 73 saw him join six players in finishing at -5.
