Claydon Powers To Peugeot International Open Title - 19/06/2007

A FLAWLESS final round of 64 from Russell Claydon has seen him take victory by three shots in The Peugeot International Open at Whittlebury Park.

The 41-year-old from Cambridge, who won the 1998 BMW International Open in Germany, failed to drop a single shot in his final round, scoring an eagle and five birdies to finish at -13.

He began the tournament with a six-under-par 65 on Wednesday before carding a level par second round.

However, he pulled through the field on Friday, with birdies at the fourth and ninth holes putting him in contention at the turn.

An eagle at the 11th hole was immediately followed by a birdie, and he made sure of the win by picking up further shots at 16 and 18.

"It's pleasing because this is what you practice for an play for," said Claydon.

"I played nicely and the second round 71 probably won me the tournament. I was patchy and to go round level par with how I played was good.

"I stuck in there and it could have been a 74 if I hadn't, and one of the things I learned on the European Tour was how the top players dig in on days when it's not going so well.

"The final round was great too, I managed to pick up some shots around the turn and I'm very happy to get the win.

"I enjoy playing on the PGA EuroPro Tour, the atmosphere is always good and standard is increasing all the time."

Claydon finished three shots clear of Simon Robinson, Euan Little, Michael Searle and Warren Bennett, who all ended the tournament at nine-under-par.

Robinson produced a brilliant course record nine-under-par 62 on Friday to take an early clubhouse lead, while Bennett, Searle and Little were in contention throughout.

Weymouth's Michael Watson carded eight birdies in a 66 to finish at -9, with Daniel Gaunt and Paul Doherty a further shot back.

Sean Whiffin's 68 helped him to secure ninth place, while a 66 from Matt Morris put him among five players at -6.
