Dredge Wins Sky Sports Trophy - 29/07/2008
Bradley Dredge (Matchroom Sport) has won the opening event of the 2003 PGA Europro Tour. Dredge finished three shots clear with a four-under-par score of 209 to take the title.
The top ranked Welsh player in the world always looked comfortable, but was held in second place after both the first and second rounds, before pulling away into the lead in the final round. He said, "It was a difficult round with the wet weather, but I just tried to play sensible golf".
With crowds gathered to watch the local European Tour star in action, Dredge stretched his lead further and further before bogeying the 16th and 17th to drop back to four under. He said, "I chipped into a bunker on the 16th which wasn't too clever, and then I was surprised to find the water with my pitching wedge on the 17th but I kept on trying to make putts and managed to do enough to keep the lead".
With light rain persisting throughout the day, many players struggled to find the length they required on the wet ground, with higher scores returned as a result.
The overnight leader, South African Louis Oosthuizen, finished in joint third place after shooting 73 in the final round, and commented, "It was great to be playing alongside Bradley. I was aware that there was a battle for second place and I had my chances but just didn't make the putts". Also tied in third place was Stephen Pullan (Wike Ridge), one shot behind Nick Ludwell (Selby) who finished in second place with a one-under-par score of 212.
