Dutch Delight As Inder Wins At Cardrona - 30/05/2008

DUTCHMAN Inder Van Weerelt picked up his maiden PGA EuroPro Tour victory by edging out Andrew Oldcorn to take the Cardrona Classic.

Van Weerelt, 24, had tied for the lead with the former Volvo PGA champion going in to the final round but held his nerve to claim the £10,000 first prize.

Heavy overnight rain had threatened to blight the final day's play at the Cardrona Hotel Golf & Country Club in the Scottish town of Peebles, but the endeavours of the greenstaff ensured the course was in excellent condition as the 53 golfers who made the cut reassembled to battle it out for the money.

Day two rounds of 68 (five-under-par) for Van Weerelt and 71 (two-under-par) for Oldcorn had seen them head the field on an overall score of 11-under-par.

Oldcorn's position had been helped by his course record 64 on the first day whilst former Walker Cup star Marc Warren was also in contention just a single shot behind.

Volatile weather conditions made it hard for any of the trio to edge in front for a significant period of time but the Dutchman, in his first year as a professional, sunk a four foot put on the last hole for a birdie giving him a final round of six-under-par and a total score of 202 (17-under-par) - just one ahead of Oldcorn, who had an eagle put on the last to force a play-off but saw his ball stop inches short of the hole.

"It is a joy and a pleasure to win against such a high class field, Van Weerelt said afterwards. "It feels good to win my first tournament and I have been scoring nicely which will hopefully be good for the next tournament at St Andrews Bay."
