Gaunt Takes Kronenbourg Classic Title - 19/08/2007
A FINAL round of 69 gave Australian Daniel Gaunt victory in The Kronenbourg Classic at Whitekirk by two shots from Eric Ramsay.
Gaunt put himself into contention at -5 following a superb 66 in the second round, when he dropped no shots, and he produced a solid, three-under-par 69 on Friday afternoon to take the win.
He shot birdies in the first two holes to make a superb start, and a run of four further birdies in six holes either side of the turn gave him enough cushion for victory.
The tournament saw most players play almost three rounds inside two days after heavy winds saw the first day's play abandoned.
"It's very pleasing to get my first win of 2006 in such tough conditions," said Gaunt.
"The weather improved as the tournament went on and I'm delighted.
"I won the Peugeot International on last year's PGA EuroPro Tour so hopefully this is the start of another good season."
Gaunt finished two shots clear of Carnoustie's Ramsay, who finished with a third successive round of 70 to end the tournament at -6.
However, the Scot needed to produce three birdies in his final four holes to jump into second place.
Ramsay was a stroke clear of Graham Rankin - who also produced a 69 in the third round after two scores of 71 - and Scott Jackson, who shot three below-par rounds.
A final round 68 from David Astin saw him in fifth place at -4.
Second round leader Stephen Gray saw his challenge fade, with a final round 75 seeing him slip from -6 to -3 for the tournament.
That saw him finish level with Graeme Clark, who moved out to -6 with a run of three birdies and an eagle in four successive holes after the turn but finished with three bogeys to slip back to fifth.
