SANDEEP Grewal has re-written the record books by shooting the best round in the history of the PGA EuroPro Tour.
Grewal, 25, fired a score of 60, including an albatross at the par-five ninth, during the final day of the PartyPoker.net English Masters at the Whittlebury Park Golf and Country Club in Northamptonshire.
However, his day could have been even better as he narrowly missed with an effort on the last that would have gave him the magical score of 59, a total achieved by only a handful of players in world golf.
"This is the best round of my career by far," said a delighted Grewal, a member of the Heswall Golf Club in Merseyside.
"I was one-under after eight and I had just played steadily with nothing special. But I holed my second shot at the ninth and that got me going.
"I just played solidly, kept hitting it to ten-feet from the pin and I didn't miss a put. There was not much wind, the conditions were perfect and I birdied the last six holes."
Grewal (pictured above), a former England amateur international, turned professional in 2000 and has been a regular on the PGA EuroPro Tour, the leading developmental golf tour in Europe, since it began in 2002.
He nearly joined a handful of golfers around the world to fire a competition round of 59 and was left with a chip from 40 yards for an eagle on the last to do so.
But his effort with the three-iron hit the flag but unfortunately did not drop.
"I didn't even realise I was on for a 59," added Grewal. "It would've been great to hit it but it's just another number and I will definitely take 60.
"At Maylands and Oulton Hall (the last two tour events) I was pretty poor but I've worked on my game and just hit it a bit better.
"I had played well on the first couple of days but had let a good round slip away on day one. Funnily enough, I actually played better yesterday from tee to green than today but today the putter was nice and solid."
Grewal started the final day in level 39th after scores of three-over and one-over at the par-71 course before his record-breaking 11-under 60 saw him become the clubhouse leader.
But it was not enough to claim the victory as Graeme Clark finished out in first to win his third event of the season to secure another £10,000.
