Local Students Enjoy Maylands Event - 10/07/2007

THE final round of the Towergate Insurance Championship at Maylands was extra special for a group of students from Peniel College of Higher Education in Brentwood.

The students, along with teacher Jacqui Lee, were guests for the third and final day of the PGA EuroPro Tour event at the Romford course.

They received a coaching session from Maylands professional Darren Parker, before watching the future stars of golf first hand in the final round.

They followed leaders Ben Welch and Phil Rowe around the full 18 holes on the deciding day, as Rowe came good in the back nine to take the title.

"We always look to involve local schools and this was a great chance for young golfers at Penial College to pick up some tips and practice their golf," said Tournament Director Kevin Feeney.

"They had great fun and it was an exciting final day for them to witness Phil Rowe winning his maiden tournament."

Local juniors who play at the Maylands course also got to taste the action during the tournament, after volunteering to caddy, update scores and provide drinks during the event.

"I'd also like to thank all the Maylands juniors who helped throughout the week," said Feeney. "Without the help of volunteers such as them, the tournament would not have been such a success.

"Everyone at Maylands - from the greenkeepers to the catering staff - worked exceptionally hard and we were rewarded with a top class tournament."
