Morgan Flies To Comeback Victory! - 04/08/2007
JOHN MORGAN made a majestic return to the winner's circle with victory in The Squibb & Davies Demolition Classic at the Players Club in Bristol.
Morgan took glory at his local event in a dramatic final day, with overnight leaders Darren Prosser and Jonathan Evans falling away.
Morgan - who has returned to the PGA EuroPro Tour and Challenge Tour this year after three years playing on the PGA Tour - only arrived back from the John Deere Classic in America on Tuesday minutes before his tee-off time.
Despite jet-lag he opened with a round of 70, and two further rounds of 71 saw him take victory by one shot at -4.
"It's nice to get a win under my belt," said Morgan, who missed the cut by one shot at the John Deere Classic two years after finishing as runner-up.
"I had a 45-hour return journey from America, got off the plane about 11am, travelled to the Players Club, got changed and effectively went straight onto the tee.
"I was pretty happy with the 70 on Tuesday, and it's nice how things have unfolded.
"It was a bit topsy-turvey today, I had seven birdies and six bogeys which is completely nuts!
"But I got the job done. I stayed patient, my attitude was fantastic and I didn't put pressure on myself."
Morgan has seen his career hampered by injury and epilepsy over the past two years, but was keen to pay tribute to his "support team".
"It's been an emotional rollercoaster but I've got some great people who support me," he said.
"My coach George Ryall, has been great, I've got a physio who also works with the England rugby union team who bounces me around and some great friends.
"They help me to relax and stay in control, and this is the reward.
"I'm playing in a Challenge Tour event in Wales next week and if things go my way I can take another step towards getting my European Tour card."
Morgan also paid tribute to his former Matchroom Golf stablemate Greg Owen, who was an early clubhouse leader on the first day of The Open.
"I've spoken to him already and wished him good luck," said Morgan. "We've played together before and he is phenomenal with the irons.
"If I had his iron play, I'd be scary! I'm sure every other pro would say he is a great talent with so much potential.
"If his driving is half-decent this week he's got an awesome chance in The Open."
Morgan himself suffered a tough start on Thursday, beginning two shots behind the leaders and hitting three bogeys in his first five holes.
Three successive birdies saw him even the ledger before he dropped shots and nine, ten and 11 to slip back again.
But a run of four birdies in the next five holes saw him surge back into contention.
Prosser finished two shots behind Morgan after a disappointing 75 on Thursday, level with David Fisher (71,71,72) on -2.
A 70 from Cobtree Manor's Matthew Ford saw him share second place with Northern Ireland's Damian Mooney, who paid for a double-bogey at the eighth and a dropped shot at the 13th.
Mark Ramsdale, Jack Doherty and Andrew Willey were a further shot back at -1 for the tournament.
Evans, who shared the overnight lead with Prosser, never recovered from a two-over-par six on the first and dropped three shots in his last five holes to finish the tournament at level par following a 77.
