MORE than 20 Scottish golfers will be aiming for success when the PGA EuroPro Tour comes to Scotland later this week.

The fourth event of the season will be held at the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf and Country Club in Peebles from Wednesday, May 23 to Friday, May 25.

Among the competitors vying for the £10,000 top prize is Elliot Saltman, who currently lies in 14th place in the order of merit.

Saltman (pictured right), a member at the Craigielaw Golf Club, is taking part in his first professional season and aiming to continue a decent start to the season.

He only finished in tied 128th place in the final round of qualifying school but did enough to just scrape into the 2007 Tour. However, he has capitalised on this fortune by finishing in tied third in the opening event at Wensum Valley in Norfolk and in equal 43rd last week at Faithlegg in Waterford, Republic of Ireland.

This will be the first time the PGA EuroPro Tour has held a competition at the Macdonald Cardrona and local player Steve Lamb, who has been club captain at Cardrona, believes it is a big boost for golf in the area.

He said: "I'll have a lot of local support with people from Peebles Golf Club coming down to watch and it's always nice to have some support. Everyone I've spoke to says they'll be here.

"The Borders is not a really high golfing area and not renowned for producing good golfers. You don't get to see these events that often so the juniors can come along and watch. It's encouraging for the young golfers and bound to spur them on a bit."

Anyone who wishes to attend the event is welcome to come and watch the competition for free. Play will start at about 8am every day.

As well as the three days of main competition, more than 75 local children will receive coaching lessons from two of the tour professionals on the final day of the event.
