Sobrinho Triumphs At Vila Sol - 27/11/2007

PORTUGAL'S Antonio Sobrinho has won The Vila Sol Barclays European Masters, defeating Inder Van Weerelt to triumph in the PGA EuroPro Tour event on home soil.

Sobrinho trailed the Dutchman by a stroke going into the final round of the Vila Sol tournament after firing in a course record 65 on Thursday to recover from +3 to four-under-par.

And the Vale do Lobo star completed a dream comeback from that first round 75 on Friday, capitalising on an inconsistent effort from Van Weerelt to capture the title by two shots.

Dutchman Van Weerelt carded six bogeys and just five birdies in a final round of 73, after two rounds of 69 had put him clear by two shots.

After a solid opening nine holes, in which he carded a birdie at the sixth hole for the third successive day, Sobrinho pulled clear on the back nine.

He capitalised with three further birdies in four holes at 12, 13 and 15 to move ahead and could even afford to drop a shot at the 17th before taking the £15,000 winners cheque.

"I'm very happy," said the 34-year-old. "This was my first event on the PGA EuroPro Tour this year and I'm delighted to win it.

"I knew I had to play to the top of my game after the first day and I managed to do that. It's a tough course but I was comfortable and it came together for me."

Robert McGuirk claimed a share of third place with a brilliant 67, although a bogey at the last denied him sole status following eight birdies.

His dropped shot ensured he ended on -3 alongside Graeme Clark, while four players were a further shot back at two-under-par.

David Fisher - a winner earlier third year on the PGA EuroPro Tour - slipped from being tied for second place going into the final round at -4 to finish seven-over-par after a nightmare 83.
