Three consecutive birdies helped Stuart Archibald storm to the top of the leaderboard on the second day of the latest event on the PGA EuroPro Tour.

Basingstoke-based Archibald leads the way going into the final day of the second competition of the season – The Kerry London PGA EuroPro Tour 2011 from the Burhill Golf Club in Surrey.

Starting the day on 68 (-4) and one shot behind Billy Fowles (Wentworth, Surrey) and Scotland’s Ross Cameron, Archibald produced a fine second round of 69 (-3) to close in on the £10,000 top prize.

Due to the two-tee start he began on Thursday from hole ten and moved to seven-under after birdies at the 13th, 16th and 17th.

He dropped a shot on the 18th but quickly regained his form with birdies at the first, second and third to move to nine-under, although a bogey at the fifth saw him fall back down to -8.

A double-bogey six at the seventh saw him briefly lose the outright lead but he then regained it with a birdie at his last hole of the day.

Archibald said: “I posted a -7 total to lead by one after a 69 (-3) today. I played nicely but stumbled over the line again and I need to be more solid tomorrow.”

Fowles is one of two players one shot behind Archibald on six-under, although bogeys on the tenth and 18th may prove costly.

He is joined on six-under by Doncaster’s Graeme Clark, the 2007 Order of Merit winner, who enjoyed a fine day with a round of 67 (-5).

It appears to be a three-horse race as Fowles and Clark are three shots ahead of Daniel Wardrop (Didsbury, Manchester) and four shots in front of five players on two-under.

Cameron ended the day on one-under despite an eagle at the par-five second as six dropped shots in 12 holes saw him fall down the leaderboard.

Event one winner Jamie Abbott (Fynn Valley, Suffolk) failed to replicate his form at Wensum Valley as he failed to make the cut after taking a double bogey seven on the fifth hole.

A total of 168 players began the event and 60 have made the cut and will be playing in the final round on Friday.
