Ufford Park Glory For McGuirk - 09/11/2007

ROBERT MCGUIRK has won his second PGA EuroPro Tour event of 2005, taking a two-shot victory in The Ufford Park Classic from Daniel Gaunt and Mark Smith.

McGuirk, who also tasted victory at Collingtree Park earlier this year, captured the final winner's cheque of the season to confirm his place at November's Tour Championship.

The win also lifted him to third in the PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit, which could be enough to earn him a Challenge Tour card for 2006 should he retain a top-five spot following the Tour Championship.

The Princes golfer shot a course record 61 on Thursday to put himself in the lead, and secured victory with a 69 in his final round.

He began Friday's final round with a birdie, although bogeys at the second and fourth holes gave the chasing pack hope that he may slip up.

However, McGuirk showed his class to enter the turn +1 for the round before picking up a birdie at the 13th and an eagle two at the 15th before finishing with three successive pars to close out the triumph.

Gaunt began his final round with an eagle as he looked for a second win of the year, but a six at the par-four fifth hole dented his challenge, although he did manage five birdies in a round of 67.

Smith also posted a 67 on the final day, but fourth birdies on the front nine were followed by an inconsistent run home as he finished on -8.

Graeme Clark ended a shot further back, also hitting an eagle at the 15th on his way to a 67, while Worthington's 65 - the best of the day - helped him to a share of ninth place on -4.

With places in the top 50 of the Order of Merit - and a subseqeuent spot in the Tour Championship - up for grabs in Friday's final round, Jason Levermore was the big beneficiary, jumping to 48th after finishing tied for 32nd place at Ufford Park.

The PGA EuroPro Tour Championship will take place from 24-26 November, with the venue to be confirmed next week.
