Whitehouse Takes Lead After Round Two - 26/07/2008

An exciting second day of play in the Peugeot International saw some fantastic golf cause a real shake up to the leaderboard, with several young stars emerging from the pack.

Tom Whitehouse, who played in last year's British Open, shot a sensational five under par round of 66 to lift him into the lead with a seven under par total. The former Spanish Amateur Champion notched up six birdies and just one bogey to give himself a two shot cushion going into the final round.

In joint second place with five under par totals of 137 were Matthew King and American Brandon Kearney. Both players had great second rounds, stacking up the birdies to finish three under for the day, as did James Holmes of Crewe and Icelandic star Bjorgvin Sigurbergsson who currently lie in joint fifth position. Joining them in fifth place is South African Jerry Coetzee, the overnight leader, who shot two over on his second round to slip down the rankings slightly, but still remains very much in contention.

In fourth place lies Sam Pigott, who played two solid rounds, recording scores of 68 and 70 respectively to finish with a four under par score of 138 for the tournament. Sam finished in second place in the 2002 PGA Europro Tour Championship after a sensational final round, and he will be hoping to do the same thing on the final day of this tournament.

Phil Worthington, who shares the spoils with Whitehouse for the best round of the day with a five under par 66, leapt up the leaderboard with a two under par total 140.

Good finishes are especially important for players at this stage of the season, as the player at the top of the PGA Europro Tour Order of Merit after the next event will receive an invitation to the Daily Telegraph Damovo British Masters!
